Materials used : Indian Polyester cone yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook.
This will be superb with our Indian Anchor knitting cotton and a 3.5 – 4 mm crochet hook too.
General yarn information : Polyester purse yarn is a polyester-silk yarn available only in India.  It is not necessary to use just this yarn for this project.
Use any yarn with a suitable hook to make your project.
I’d say any knitting cotton will work beautifully too.

Difficulty level : Easy to intermediate skill level

Stitches used : (Using U.S. terminology)
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY

Instructions (U.S. terminology)
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and project /product measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

In today's case, we will work it for the width and length needed for your tablet or I-pad cover.

The beauty of this pattern is that you could work with either an sc or an e-sc.
I love the e-sc and that is what I’ve used.
There is a video tutorial link for the linen stitch using sc.
But I’ve replace the sc for an e-sc (extended single crochet) and then worked the linen stitch as a Spike stitch.  Don't worry - there's a video tutorial for this as well.

I would suggest you use multiple colours – well at least 2 colors - for all your hard work and the beauty of your stitch work to show through.

We work our pattern in rounds, starting at the bottom and working our way to the top.

The Stitch count for today’s pattern is just an even number of stitches that you want for the width of your project.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Start with fsc in an even number of stitches (depending on the width you want for your project).
Join with a sl-st to the 1st fsc.

Note : Once you have worked your fsc length, place it against your I-pad / tablet or mobile phone and see if you have the width right.
As we want this to be a snug fit, pull and stretch your yarn a bit too

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://: .be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Round 1 : In this first round, we will work sc all the way to the end of our fsc row, and then when we reach the end we will TURN 90°;
and work 3 sc in that last st ;
then we will TURN 90° again and work at the bottom of our fsc row ;
and then TURN 90° one last time to work 2 sc in that 1st st.
So from this row on, we will work in rounds.  Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

If this video does not come on automatically, please go to https://youtu.be/DwkKgtGaJMY

We start our pattern with the Linen stitch.

Linen Stitch : Here is an easy video tutorial for the linen stitch at https://youtu.be/ui2s0V-dGPg

Round 2 : sc in the 1st sc ;
*ch 1, sk next sc ; sc in the next sc* ;
rep *to* till end all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 3 : sl-st in the 1st ch-sp, sc in that same 1st ch-sp ;
*ch 1, sk next sc ; sc in the next ch-sp* ;
rep *to* till end all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Rep Rounds 3 for about 1.5 – 2”

Then with a contrast colour (just so that the hard work shows) work one round of the alternate Long or Spike stitches, still working in Linen stitch.
So this is going to be a Linen Spike Stitch.

So what's a spike / long stitch?
Spike or Long stitch : https://youtu.be/HOmg3TlBF64

I worked the long stitch with the e-sc.
Now the long stitch is the same as the regular sc or e-sc, but we work in the stitch one row below, which gives it the longer look.
So what I’ve done here is work one long /spike stitch, followed by a regular sc or e-sc, so there is an up-n-down look to the stitch in this round.
Check the video below for the Linen Spike Stitch.
In case the video does not come on, please go to  https://youtu.be/5Z_T5A7LGMw

Extended Single Crochet (e-sc) : hk into st, yo (2 lps on hk), pull through one lp, yo (2 lps on hk),pull through both lps.  One e-sc made. (An e-sc is basically an sc on an sc)

Extended single crochet (e-sc) : Here is an easy video tutorial

How to change colors seamlessly : Here’s an easy video tutorial to show you how to change from the Main color to the Contrast or second color of yarn seamlessly.  View it at https://youtu.be/fRzSBja9jno

How to carry your yarn when using two colors : Here’s an easy video tutorial to show you how to carry your yarn along when working with two colours.

What I have done :
I'd suggest you work two rows with the Linen Spike stitch in a contrast color, then work 2 rows with a second color or the main color ; and then work 2 more rows with the contrast color to get a band of pattern in your work.

Once I'd worked one color band, I went back to working the Linen Stitch using sc in the main color (white in my case).
The following row is a linen stitch round, followed yet again with a contrast colour long / spike stitch round.

So playing with these combination of stitches and coloured yarn have fun creating a lovely pattern.

I ensured that the top of my cover was just a little bit more than the length of the tablet – remembering that the yarn has a little stretch and will add a little bit more over use.

For the button closure I decided to sl-st to the centre of the round ;
and then I worked a long chain (18 ch).
I then skipped the first 5 ch (which will make my button loop) and then worked a sl-st in each ch all the way back to the 1st st.

Here's a video tutorial - Though the number of stitches vary, you will get a visual of what we're trying to do here

In case this video tutorial does not come on, please go to

Fasten off and weave in ends.
All we now need to do is add in that button, slip in the precious tablet or I-pad and we’ve got a lovely secure hand made gift for someone you love.
