A PAIR OF NAUTICAL INSPIRED SETS -  CAP, SCARF, SHOES n DIAPER SET

After the super success of my first cute Mouse inspired baby set, I was asked to design this set for a pair of twins expected by a Master Mariner (i.e Captain in the Navy for the land-lubbers). I thought of making a Captain and a Pirate costume, but as they’re a pair of girl twins, hmmm.. a cute little nautical inspired theme was what we agreed on.
So join me as I explore the depths of the sea…  ok.. that's cheesy

Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

Today we'll work on two full nautical inspired sets - of a cap, scarf, shoes and a diaper cover

Here’s an awesome link for sizing of head for baby caps http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2015/08/baby-hat-knitting-sizes/

For head wear, I advise that you make the beret / beanie about an inch smaller than intended, keeping in mind the stretch of your yarn.

Check the head measurement charts at the top of this blog, and read the information below as well before you start working.

1. Hat circumference = measure around the head just above ears and subtract one inch for a nicely fitted finished hat.

2. Crown width = (this is a flat circular top of the hat) you need to divide hat circumference by 3.14 (pi).

3. Hat height = Head circumference / 10 x 4.

For my cap, I’ve basically used this link from Knotty Knotty Crochet http://knottyknotty.blogspot.in/2013/05/minnie-little-mouse-hat-shoes-and-skirt.html

Work this pattern till Point 5 (of that link) or till you have a cap that is about 6” OR as indicated in the sizing list for a cap sized for the head desired.

For our Nautical cap, the only difference I’ve made it making a full round flap that can be turned upwards. So for that, here are my notes below.
For convenience, I’m therefore, going to start numbering with Round 1

We are making the little flap that will turn upwards now, and so there’s a small increase we need to make on the following round.

For most of the pattern I’ve used the links I’ve found given below… and then I’ve added my notes of how I’ve joined and added the little difference ..
Well, I’m not sure if it’s a ‘difference’, as there are a few gaps in the instructions given in the links below.. so I’m hoping that my notes fill those in.

So may I suggest that you scroll through this full write up first, before clicking on these links.

1.       NAUTICAL CAP

I like to start with the foundation starts as against chain, as it gives a better finish or start to my work.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc :  https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

I'd like to share the way I start my double crochet rows with a chainless start.
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Round 1 : Increase row : 2 dc in the 1st dc ;
dc in the next 3 dc ;
(2 dc in the next dc ; dc in the next 3 dc) ;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 2 : dc in the 1st dc ;
dc in each dc all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 3 : Rep Round 2. Turn.

Note : At the end of the last round, I’ve turned because I want the front of my sc showing when we turn the top flap upwards.
If you do not turn, then you will have the underside of the sc showing when you turn the flap upwards.
Please turn the flap up and see what I mean, and if it makes no difference to you, then continue working without turning.

Round 4 : with CC : sc in the 1st dc ;
sc in each dc all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

2.      NAUTICAL BERET

Yet again, take a look at the link for sizing of head for baby caps   http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2015/08/baby-hat-knitting-sizes/

For my second piece of nautical head wear, I’ve decided to try and design a beret for a baby 0 - 6 m.

For our beret, I used the same pattern as for the cap, but used sc all through instead of dc, as I want a larger circumference, but slower increases (if that makes sense).
So let’s work this pattern now, shall we?

Start : with a magic circle and 12 dc in the circle ;
join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Pull lightly to close the magic circle.

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Round 1 : 2 sc in the 1st dc and in each dc all around ;
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (24 sts)

Round 2 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (24 sts)

Round 3 : Increase round : sc in the 1st sc ;
2 sc in the next sc ;
(sc in the next sc ; 2 sc in the next sc)  ;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (36 sts)

Round 4 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (36 sts)

Round 5 : Increase round : sc in the 1st 2 sc ;
2 sc in the next sc ;
(sc in the next 2 sc ; 2 sc in the next sc)  ;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (48 sts)

Round 6 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (48 sts)

Rounds 7 - 12 : Rep Rounds 5 and 6 three times, increasing 12 sts every alternate round, till you have 84 sts (so next increase will give you 60, then 72 and finally 84 sts).

We will now reduce in each round to get to 48 sts, and we’ll use the sc 2-tog for decreases.

Single crochet 2-together : sc 2-tog :
Insert hk into st, yo and pull up a lp (2 lps on hk) ; insert hk into next sc, yo and pull up a lp (3 lps on hk); yo and draw through all 3 lps.  One sc 2-tog complete.  Visit this video tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whlsMemDHLc

Round 13 : Decrease round : sc in the 1st 5 sc ;
sc 2-tog over the next 2 sc ;
(sc in the next 5 sc ; sc 2-tog over the next 2 tog) ;
rep (to) all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (72 sts)

Round 14 : Decrease round : sc in the 1st 4 sc ;
sc 2-tog over the next 2 sc ;
(sc in the next 4 sc ; sc 2-tog over the next 2 tog) ;
rep (to) all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (60 sts)

Round 15 : Decrease round : sc in the 1st 3 sc ;
sc 2-tog over the next 2 sc ;
(sc in the next 3 sc ; sc 2-tog over the next 2 tog) ;
rep (to) all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (48 sts)

Round 16 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (48 sts)

Rounds 17 - 20 : Rep Round 16. (48 sts)

Front post single crochet : fpsc :  Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch on the row below.  Here is an easy video tutorial for the fpsc at https://youtu.be/OQa8YLpkdXs

Round 21 : fpsc in the 1st sc ;
fpsc in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (48 sts)

Rounds 22 - 23 : with CC : Rep Round 21.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

3.      NAUTICAL SCARF 1

Sweet Nothings crochet free crochet pattern blog ; photo of one of the scarves for the Nautical inspired sets in blue and white

Here’s the chart by the Yarn Council for baby body sizes that  I’ve used   http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/babysize.html

 Foundation double crochet (fdc) : This is a unique way of starting a project directly with a row of double crochet stitches.  Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/hjNUYVvyU9k

Start : Row 1 : with a fdc and work as many needed for the size you’re making.
I’ve done a fdc length of 8” for a 6m old.

Row 2 : dc in the 1st fdc
and in each fdc till end.  Turn.

Row 3 - 8 : dc in the 1st dc
and in each dc till end.  Turn.

We’ve done the little back part of our scarf.
Now we will work the front bits of our scarf, one side at a time.

Row 9 : dc in the 1st dc and in the next 10 dc.
Turn. (11 dc)

Rows 10 - 11 : Rep Row 9.

Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.
This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.
Sometimes we work the dc 2-tog in the same stitch, to use as a decorative stitch.
Visit this video tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCQOBc83Vxo

Row 12 : dc 2-tog over the in the 1st 2 dc ;
dc in each dc till the last 2 dc ;
dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc.  Turn.  (9 dc)

Rows 13 – 14 : dc in the 1st dc
and in each dc till end.  Turn.

Row 15 : Rep Row 12  (7 dc)

Rows 16 - 21 : dc in the 1st dc
and in each dc till end.  Turn.

Row 22 : dc 2-tog over the in the 1st 2 dc ;
dc in the next 3 dc ;
dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc.  Turn. (5 dc)

Rows 23 – 24 : dc in the 1st dc
and in each dc till end.  Turn.

Row 25 : dc 2-tog over the in the 1st 2 dc ;
dc in the next dc ;
dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc.  Turn. (3 dc)

Row 26 : dc 3-tog over all 3 dc.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Re-attach yarn in the 11th dc from end, and mirror these rows for the second side of your scarf. Fasten off.

Finishing :
Attach CC yarn and work a row of either sl-st or sc all around the scarf.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

4.      NAUTICAL SCARF 2

Sweet Nothings crochet free crochet pattern blog ; photo of one of the scarves for the Nautical inspired sets in blue and white

For this scarf, we will start at one pointed end of the scarf, work up the length and end at the other pointed end, all in one continuous movement.

Start : with 1 fsc.  Turn.

Note If you find it difficult to work an fsc, start with 3 ch.
Turn, and work 2 dc in the 1st ch (or the 3rd ch from hook).
IF you choose to do this start, ignore Row 2 and go straight to Row 2 instructions.

Row 1 : 3 dc in the fsc.  Turn. (3 dc)

Row 2 : 2 dc in the 1st dc ;
dc in the next dc ;
2 dc in the last dc.  Turn. (5 dc)

Row 3 : 2 dc in the 1st dc ; dc in the next 3 dc ;
2 dc in the last dc.  Turn. (7 dc)

Row 4 - 9 : dc in the 1st dc ;
dc in each dc till end.  Turn. (7 dc)

Row 10 : 2 dc in the 1st dc ; dc in the next 3 dc ;
2 dc in the last dc.  Turn. (9 dc)

Row 11 - 12 : dc in the 1st dc ;
dc in each dc till end.  Turn. (9 dc)

Row 13 : 2 dc in the 1st dc ; dc in the next 3 dc ;
 2 dc in the last dc.  Turn. (11 dc)

Row 14 - 31 : dc in the 1st dc ;
dc in each dc till end.  Turn. (11 dc)

Row 32 : dc 2-tog over the in the 1st 2 dc ;
dc in each dc till the last 2 dc ;
dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc.  Turn.  (9 dc)

Row 33 – 34 : dc in the 1st dc and in each dc till end.  Turn.

Rows 35 : Rep Row 12  (7 dc)

Row 36 - 41 : dc in the 1st dc
and in each dc till end.  Turn.

Row 42 : dc 2-tog over the in the 1st 2 dc ; dc in the next 3 dc ;
dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc.  Turn. (5 dc)

Row 43 – 44 : dc in the 1st dc and in each dc till end.  Turn.

Row 45 : dc 2-tog over the in the 1st 2 dc ; dc in the next dc ;

5.      NAUTICAL SCARF TIE / TOGGLE

Sweet Nothings crochet free crochet pattern blog ; photo of both the scarves for the Nautical inspired sets in blue and whiteSweet Nothings crochet free crochet pattern blog ; photo of one of the scarves for the Nautical inspired sets in blue and white

For this lil scarf tie, I made a small length of fdc chain, which I then attached joined and slipped onto the scarf.

Start : with 14 fdc.  Fasten off and leave a small tail for attachment.
I joined the two ends of the fdc to make a small round, which you then slip onto the scarf, and we’re done.

6.      NAUTICAL SHOES

For the cute little Mary Jane shoes , I used the pattern from Knotty Knotty Crochet http://knottyknotty.blogspot.in/2013/03/pretty-plain-little-mary-jane-free.html

and for the second pair, I used the Blue Whale free pattern   http://crobypatterns.com/free-crochet-pattern-blue-whale/

7.      NAUTICAL DIAPER  (for 0 – 6 month old)

Sweet Nothings crochet free crochet pattern blog ; photo of one of the Nautical inspired sets in white and blueSweet Nothings crochet free crochet pattern blog ; photo of one of the Nautical inspired sets in blue and white
For our cute little diapers , I made one each in blue and white – and on the white diaper, there’s this cute little blue trim skirt and vice versa on the blue set.

There is a diaper pattern is at  http://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2016/02/a-really-cute-mouse-cap-shoes-n-diaper.html as well, but here’s what I’ve done for this diaper.

Here is a really neat link for sizing of diapers for babies https://in.pinterest.com/pin/190769734191107008/

The sizing for the diaper given was too small for me, so here’s what I’ve done.  I’ve used much of Knotty Knotty’s pattern and give her total credit for this.

Start with white yarn and 60 fsc.  Turn.

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Row 1 : hdc in the 1st fsc and in each fsc till end. Turn.

Row 2 : dc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc till end. Turn.

Row 3 : dc in the 1st dc and in each dc till end. Turn.

Row 4 : sl-st in the 1st 15 sts,
dc in each dc till last 15 sts. Skip last 15 sts. Turn.

Row 5 : Rep Row 3.

Row 6 : dc 2-tog over 1st 2 dc ;
dc in each dc till last 2 dc ; dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc. Turn.

Row 7 - 11 : dc 2-tog over 1st 2 dc ; dc in each dc till last 2 dc ;
dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc. Turn.

Rows 12 - 17 : Rep Row 3.
Fasten off white yarn, and attach blue yarn.

Row 18 : (with blue) sc in each dc till end , then go all around the sides of the diaper as well in sc.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

8.      FOR THE NAUTICAL SKIRT

I’ve used much of Knotty Knotty’s pattern and give her total credit for this.

Yet again, I’ve made one blue and one white skirt. On the blue skirt, I’ve used a CC of white and vice versa on the blue skirt, so depending on which colour you start with that becomes the MC and the other is the CC.

Start : with CC : and 60 fsc.

Row 1 : with MC : sc in the 1st fsc and in each fsc till end. Turn.

Row 2 : with CC : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end. Turn.

Row 3 : (Increase row) : with MC : hdc in 1st sc ; 2
hdc in the next sc ;
(hdc in the next sc ; 2 hdc in the next sc) ;
rep (to) till end. Turn.

Row 4 - 7 : with MC : hdc in each hdc till end. Turn.

Row 8 : with CC : sc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc till end. Turn.

Row 9 : with MC : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end. Turn.

Row 10 : with MC : ch 1, sk 1st 2 sc, 5 dc in the next sc ;
sk next 2 sc, sl-st in the next sc ;
(sk next 2 sc, 5 dc in the next sc ; sk next 2 sc, sl-st in the next sc) ;
rep (to) till end. Turn.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

FINISHING FOR SKIRT :
I’ve attached the tops of the diaper and the skirt from end to end, and as there are the same number of start stitches, it’s a neat attachment.
I’ve then put the two buttons on the centre flap of the diaper bit, such that it will loop into the first row of dc of the side flaps and will be neatly covered by the skirt
