HEARTS FOR THE PEYTON HEART PROJECT

I received a mail on Facebook from Mr. David James re his Peyton Heart Project in honour of his son Peyton James.  I was very moved by the project and have decided to try and make some hearts to contribute to the project.

I am blessed that a friend is willing to take my small contribution to this project with her when she leaves for USA shortly.  Thank you, Padma.

Thank you for joining me.

Difficulty level : Easy to Intermediate crochet skills

Materials used : Today I’ve used our Indian acrylic ,  with a 3.5 mm crochet

Abbreviations used :
ch : chain            ch-sp : chain space
sp : space           rep : Repeat
 trc : Treble / Triple crochet
fsc : Foundation single crochet
hdc : Half double crochet

Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY

How to carry your yarn when using two colors : Here’s an easy video tutorial to show you how to carry your yarn along when working with two colours.

Instructions :
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

There are several free links for hearts, and I’ve decided to use as many of them as I can for the project.  The only thing that is needed for this project is that there should be a 10 cm or 4” long tail left, so that the Project can add their specially worded tags.

So at the end of each heart, (just after we sl-st and join to that 1st st on the last round), we will do a 10 cm / 4” long chain.

Please note though that in some of these patterns, the designer has written the pattern in U.K terminology, so do look at the chart that’s given for U.S terminology.

Pattern for Heart 1

Let’s start with the first of our heart shaped patterns with this lovely one I found on a Pinterest board.  There is no write up but a rough chart.. so let’s see how that turns out, shall we?

Now using the same pattern, I’ve worked two hearts.  If we do just the start row and Row 1, we have a smaller heart, and then if we follow the chart to completion, it’s a little larger.  So both images given below, so you can decide how large you want your finished project.  https://www.pinterest.com/pin/436778863830923731/

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Start with a magic circle and 10 sc in that circle.
Ch 1, and join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.

We will now divide our circle at that ch-1 sp, which will be the lowest point for the dip in the heart shape.

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Row 1 : 2 dc in the 1st sc ;
(2 dc in the next sc) ;
dc in the next 3 sc ; trc in the next sc] ;
dc in the next 3 sc ;
rep (to) in the last 2 sc.  Turn.

Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times.  One trc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/A0y4BbgDTbs

Row 2 : 3 dc in the 1st dc ;
(2 dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) 5 times ;
trc in the next trc ;
rep (to) 6 times ;
3 dc in the last dc.  Turn.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
If making this for the Peyton Heart Project, we need a 4” / 10 cm tie, so I did a sl-st all the way down to the centre of the heart, and then worked a 10cm long chain from there. Fasten off and weave in ends.

A lovely pattern with a neat seemingly difficult looking end result.  I love that this pattern is so diverse.  So the original pattern asks for a start with 10 ch, and we then work a 9 sc square over which we work the semicircles to make it a heart shape.
I played with this pattern a bit, and started with 7 ch, then following the pattern, made it a 6 sc square (so rep only from Row 2 – 6, instead of Row 9).  Then as this is a smaller square, instead of the trc per pattern, I used dc’s, and this is what I got.

However, the error I made here is that starting with the 7 ch meant an even number of sts, so when we’re doing the semicircles, I had to work in between sts 3 & 4 to get it neat and even.  To avoid this start with 8 ch, and then work a 7 sc x 7 rows chain.. or basically start with an even number of stitches if starting with a regular chain start.
That said, if you opt to start with the wonderful fsc start, then start with an odd number of stitches.

This pattern is similar to Heart 3.  However, there are two heart patterns on this pattern sheet.

This pattern is similar to that for Heart 3, but I love that the designer has used the superb magic circle to close the heart.. Just what I was thinking of doing when I saw the pattern for Heart 3
So, if I were voting for my favourite pattern, it would be this one !
