TULIP BLANKET
This blanket
has been made for a really special lady in Brisbane who has lived over nine
decades and still finds something to smile about every day. I love her attitude and hope she smiles when
she receives this blanket too

Instruction information
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
This is a straight and simple pattern worked
side to side. There are three basic
colours – one for the base of the blanket ; one for the leaves and the third
one for the tulip flowers. You can
decide to change the third colour, and have several tulip flowers and that will
change your floral blanket.
You can make this blanket to any size you
desire. Just work multiples of the stitch
count given and have fun creating a beautiful blanket.
The pattern chart shows sc used in the part
between the tulip rows.
You can decide
to use an sc ; hdc or dc in these stitches.
I will write the instructions using sc though,
as that’s how it is charted.

Start with fsc in
multiples of 3 + 2
Note : If you
are thinking of working the rows in between tulips in sc, then start with
fsc. If you decide to use hdc or dc in
between, you could start with fdc as well.
Take a look at the top of this blog for a “How to”.
Row 1 : (Using MC)
: sc in the 1st fsc and in each fsc till end. Turn.
Row 2 : sc in the 1st
sc and in each sc till end. Turn.
Row 3 : Rep Row 2.
In the following row we’ll start with our leaf /
stem base.
We will use a “V”-st here
which is (dc ; ch 1, dc) all in the same st or ch-sp.
Row 4 : (Using CC
leaf colour) :
dc in the 1st sc ; sk next st, ”V”-st in the next st
;
*sk next 2 sts, “V”-st in the next st* ;
rep *to* till the last 2 sts ;
sk next st and dc in the last st. Turn.
And before you know it, I’m throwing choices and
decisions at you.
The pattern chart shows a dc 4-tog
that makes the little tulip bud. So
choices : Depending on how thick your yarn is, you can increase or decrease the
number of stitches that you hold together (i.e you can work in a dc 3-tog or a
dc 5-tog here).
I have also given a link
on how to do the Popcorn stitch, which will make your little tulip flower “pop”
out and looks beautifully 3D.
You can
decide on using that stitch too – create and enjoy.
For convenience though, I am going to write dc 4-tog
as charted.
Row 5 : (Using CC
flower colour) : dc in the 1st sc ;
ch 1, dc 4-tog in the next ch-1 sp (of the
“V”-st) ;
*ch 2, dc 4-tog in the next ch-1 sp (of the next
“V”-st”)* ;
rep *to* till the last “V”-st ;
ch 1, dc in the last st. Turn.
Row 6 : (Using MC)
: sc in the 1st dc ;
*sc in the next dc 4-tog ; 2 sc in the next ch-2
sp* ;
rep *to* till the last ch-1 sp ;
sc in that last ch-1 sp ; sc in the last
dc. Turn.
Row 7 - 8 :
Rep Row 2.
And before you know it, ah –hah.. we’ve completed
one set of tulip flowers and one pattern repeat.
Rep Rows 4 to 8 till your blanket is of the
length needed.
Note : I have
decided to keep a larger ‘blank’ (non-flowery) section between my flower beds so if you decide to do likewise, ensure that you have an odd number of
rows in between. This will ensure that
your tulip flower heads all come in the same way (i.e right side up)

the length and width of your blanket, and one hopes you’ve remembered that we
will be adding a few inches in this border as well.

For the border I’ve decided to use this pattern

Our stitch count repeat is 10. So for our first round, let’s work a round of
sc / hdc or dc all around ensuring that you have a count of 10. Ensure that you work 2 sts in each corner
so that you get a nice rounded edge.
Start : with a
round of sc / hdc or dc all around and 2 sts in each corner, to get a total in
multiples of 10. Ensure that you have a multiple
of 10 in each side which will then ensure a multiple of 10 all around. Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 1 : sc in the 1st
st ;
*(ch 3, sk next st, sc in the next st) ;
rep
(to) 2 times ;
ch 5, sk next 2 sts, sc in the next st* ;
rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the
1st st.
Round 2 : sl-st into
the 1st ch-3 sp , sc in the same ch-3 sp ;
*(ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp) ;
rep (to) once

In our last border round, we will use a
decorative picot.
Let’s use a ch-3
picot, which is (ch 3, sl-st into the 3rd ch from hk).
Now there are three picots that are going to
come around the ch-sp. For originality
and creativity, play with how many and where you place your picots.
That said, I am going to write instructions as
charted.
How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook). For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
