The exquisite rose hair comb

I just finished one simple floral hair comb or barrette and this lovely exquisite rose popped up on my screen.. and of course you know, there is no way I can resist a thing of beauty. This is not my pattern, for either the rose or the leaves. I’ve used two different patterns here to create this one exquisite (and even if I say so) & perfect hair barrette.

Materials used : Today I’ve used the lovely Indian Red ros e metallic cotton yarn with a 1.3 mm crochet hook

You also need a tic-tac hair clip or a hair barrette ; headband or rubber band ; or tic-tac clip ; fabric glue ; embroidery needle to attach your little motif.

For Indians : You could use Anchor ; Red Rose metallic cotton or unbranded knitting cotton as well

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.

This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

For this project, I have used a rose pattern from one place and the leaf pattern from another to create this stunningly exquisite hair comb… So we will make these little motifs and then add then all up together to make our lovely little hair comb creation.

As before, I am going to give you ideas, and you can throw in picots and beads as you please to jazz up your own creation.

I’ve only used the first part of this rose for one of my motifs here, and then used the full one as well. So go have a look-see and make this one rose motif to start.

So here are my notes for the leaf

Start with a 10 ch.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st ch.

We will now work a whole barrage of stitches right into that ch-10 sp we’ve created. We will then end with creating a small stem that you will use to attach it onto your project. Let’s go…

Oh, we’re going to use a longish picot-like creation at the very centre of our leaf.

For this picot, we will work ch 5, then turn and work a sl-st in the 4 chs all the way back to the st that we started out of. Get it?

Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times. One trc made.

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook). For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).

Round 1 : (2 sc ; 2 hdc ; 3 dc ; 3 trc ; trc + picot ; 3 trc ; 3 dc ; 2 hdc ; 2 sc) all in the same ch-10 sp ;

Join with a sl-st and then work a picot again at this end as well.

This is the stem that you will use to attach onto your hair barrette or project.

So we have this cute little leaf with two picots on either end, and by mixing them around, you will actually get two differently shaped leaves! Magic!

To increase the stem length, you will just need to increase the number of chain you start with. Easy, right?

Fasten off and leave a long tail to attach your flower motif to the barrette or project of choice.

Note : As I suggested earlier, you can throw in a bead right in the centre of the leaf motif, or along the edges of your flower motif and watch your lovely little flower creation twinkle as the wearer moves her head!
