EASY-PEASY GREY N PINK CROP TOP
I have heard about this yarn that’s available in
hanks here in India for a really long time.. and I am thrilled to have
*finallllly* got my first large batch of this cotton yarn – I was shaking with
excitement at all I can do with all this yarn .. and here’s what I am working
on first with it.

Materials used : Today I’ve
used ~ 100 gms of some lovely local unbranded Indian 4-ply knitting cotton yarn
with a 3.5 mm
For Indians : This
unbranded cotton yarn that I’ve used has been purchased from Mr. Vinod of Samrat
Megastore, Pune. It is a lot like our
Indian Anchor knitting or Laura knitting cottons
For Non-Indians : I have used a regular knitting cotton that technically uses a 2 – 2.5 mm crochet hook (recommended). I use a larger hook as I like the extra stretch it affords the end product. Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
For this
top, I’ve decided to keep it reallllly simple.. just play with the yarn colours
and keep let the pattern do it’s trick.
When I
make my notes, I like to keep them simple such that they can be adapted to be
made for any size. All you need
to remember is to ensure that you have the stitch count right, and the rest
will just all work out.
If you
decide to use two colours, just go ahead and interchange the colours as and
when you like .. be creative.

The stitch
count for our top is in mulitples of 3 + 1.

the same st or ch-sp

In the
following row we will work a dc 2-tog, but for this pattern, we’re going to work
it in a little different way. We will
work the 1st leg of our dc 2-tog over the 1st dc of the
“V”-st, and the 2nd part of the same dc 2-tog over the next dc of
the same “V”-st, skipping over the ch-1 sp of the “V”-st.

For
convenience, let’s call this our Special dc 2-tog.
Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog : [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times. One dc 2-tog made.

Row 8 :

Fasten off
and weave in ends.
You now
have one rectangle complete.
Repeat these instructions once more for the other side of your top.
Finishing
:
Place the
two rectangles together (one each for the front and back).
Using one of the joining methods given below, join the sides of the top all the way till the armhole. Fasten off.

Re-attach
your yarn at the top corner for the shoulders and attach the two shoulders till
the neckline.
Repeat
this for the other side of the top as well.
Your sleeveless crop
top is done. As we've worked the whole pattern without any armhole shaping or decrease, the shoulder bit will slowly and beautifully slide over onto the top of the arm and form a bit of a Magyar-like "sleeve".
At the same time, you will have a beautifully sliced boat-neck neckline .. and all done with just the two attachments above! Ain't that just fantastic!?
Optional
ideas :
You could
decide to work either a small sleeve or just finish off the edge of the
armhole.
1.
To just finish the edge : Attach your yarn at the
armhole and sc evenly around. Remember
that as you are working along the vertical bars of the dc, work 2 sc per vertical
bar. Keep a count of how many sc you
work along one armhole and repeat the same number for the other armhole
2.
To work a small sleeve : First you will need to run a round of sc all
around anyway, and ensure that they are in multiples of 3. Work the same
pattern you have worked for the body of your top. The only difference is that as we are now
working in a round, you will not work the dc in the 1st st.
You will work a “V”-st in the 1st sc and then sk 2 sc, “V”-st in the
next sc, all around. At the end of the
round, you will join with a sl-st. Work
the sleeve for as long as you wish.
Remember though, that as you are working this in a cylindrical way, you
should not keep it too long, as the arm is not cylindrical, and it may be a
little uncomfy. A short upper-arm length
will be just right.
So go
ahead.. create.. be different and have fun.
