AN EASY PEASY SCARF

I am pretty sure this scarf has been made and remade several times, but this is just something I came up with really fast for a friend and here are my notes for this really easy peasy scarf.
You can use this pattern to make a scar, cowl or wrap - how cool and easy is this, huh?

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Materials used : I have used under 50 gms of our lovely Indian Oswal Cashmilon 3-ply, light fingering yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook
For Indians : You could also use our Indian Anchor / Red rose / White or the wide range of Alize knitting cotton yarns with a 3 - 3.5 mm crochet hook too.
For Non-Indians : The yarn that I have used is a light fingering yarn and technically uses a 2.5 – 3 mm crochet hook.  I prefer using a slightly larger hook size as I love the extra stretch it gives the scarf.

Size : ~ 3.5” x 70”

Abbreviations :
sc : Single crochet                   yo : Yarn Over
st(s) : Stitch(es)                       hk : hook
lp(s) : Loop(s)                          dc : Double crochet
sl-st : Slip Stitch
sc-blo : Single Crochet Back Loop Only
fsc : Foundation single crochet
hdc : Half Double crochet

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I use the concept of stitch count.  This means that you will work the pattern, using this stitch count, for the length / width needed for your project. This ensures that you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size you want.

This pattern, as with all my patterns, this one too can be made to any size – any width and any length.. just check the stitch count and have fun creating something beautiful.

If you decide to make this into a wrap, just start with more stitches.
To make this a cowl, first decide on the width and start with that many stitches in multiples of the stitch count given, and then join the ends.
Joining methods given at the end for your convenience.

Our stitch count for this scarf is in multiples of 6 + 1.

So depending on how wide you want it, work your start row in multiples of the stitch count given above accordingly.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Start :  with fsc in multiples of 6 + 1. Turn.
Note : Make a note of the number of stitches you start with so you can end with the same number.

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

In the following row, our Shell stitch is (3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc).
Row 1 : dc in the 1st fsc ;
*sk next  2 fsc, Shell st in the next fsc ;
sk next 2 fsc, sc in the next fsc* ;
rep *to* till the last 7 fsc ;
sk next 2 fsc ; shell st in the next fsc ;
sk next 2 fsc, dc in the last fsc. Turn.

Row 2 : dc in the 1st dc ;
*ch 3, sk next  3 dc (of the Shell st), sc in the ch-1 sp (of the Shell st) ;
ch 3, sk next 3 dc (of the Shell st), dc in the next sc* ;
rep *to* till the end,
dc in the last dc. Turn.

Row 3 : dc in the 1st dc ;
*Shell st in the next sc ; sc in the next dc* ;
rep *to* till the end ,
dc in the last dc. Turn.

And that’s our pattern done ! Short , sweet and so easy peasy, don’t you agree?

Rep Rows 2 & 3 for the length you want for your scarf , ending with Row 2.

Finishing :
A lovely shawl always needs a lovely finish.
I'd suggest you run a row of sc all the way down that last row.

Remember the number of stitches you started with.
I'd suggest you work 4 dc in the 6 dc that make up the Shell st (so work 1 sc in the 1st st of the 1st 3-dc set), sk the next st and work a sc in the next sc ;l
similarly work just 2 sc in the next 3 sc, skipping the dc in the middle ;
work 1 ac in the ch-1 sp in the middle of the shell st ;
and 1 sc in the sc between shell stitches ;
Start and end with a sc and you should have the stitch number right.
Count your stitches at the end of the last row.

Ensure that you block your project for best effect, keeping in mind yarn instructions for blocking.

Here are several ideas for ending off your scarf.
You can add tassels and / or beads.. or you can add both tassels and beads.
Check out these helpful links and go for it.. create something beautiful.. and have fun.

How to add tassels for a scarf : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xZOQAh5KGA

How to make a small pattern with your tassels : Here’s a quick tutorial at https://youtu.be/Pt5BMW_OlAg on making a small pattern using your tassels.

Who knows, but you could try a line of beads at the end of the project!! I think it would look swell.

You could add a baed at the end of a tassel and instead of having a bunch of tassels from each space along your row, have just one strand that is double into half, and have a light bead in each end.

You could make this into a cowl - just join the two ends - or make it into a wrap - just start with more stitches.

Get creative and make something lovely.

Whipstitch to join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the whipstitch at https://youtu.be/wZ-9LNzftMA

Invisible join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the embroidery needle and whipstitch to get an invisible join at https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM
