SPIRALLED BERET

Once again, I come to you with more headwear – and some of these are unusual ones.. so hopefully you’re going to have as much fun making them as I am in discovering them, and collating them here for you.

These are NOT my original patterns – these are free patterns I’ve found floating the net and the charts included here are the original charts from the designer.

Materials used : Bernat Baby Softee Sparkle ~ 70 gms ; using 4  mm (US G, 6) crochet hook
For Indian (yarn users) : This yarn is similar to our Indian Vardhaman Millenium yarn, which you can use with either a 4 mm or a 4.5 mm crochet hook)

Size made : Head circumference : ~ 21”
Gauge : 2 dc 2-tog rows (high) x 3 dc 2-tog sts (across) = 1”

Stitches used :

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLuSVyKvoUg

Chainless dc start : Instead of the usual start with ch 2 or ch 3,I’d like to introduce a lovely way of starting a double crochet row.  Do take a look at this self explanatory super video
In case you are unhappy with this start, or do not like it, do continue with the usual ch-2 or ch-3 start.  However, all instructions will be given assuming that you are using this chainless dc start.

fpdc : Front Post Double Crochet : Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch of the row below.
yo, hk into sp between posts of st from row below – going from back of stitch, around st and into the front of the st ; yo, pull yarn through the sps (3 lps on hk), (yo & pull through 2 lps) twice.  One fpdc complete

dc 2-tog : Double crochet 2-tog : [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times , (3 lps on hk) ; yo, draw through all lps on hk.  One dc 2-tog made.

Round 15 : hdc in 1st fpdc ; hdc in each ch and dc 2-tog till end.
(Do not join, but continue in rounds)

Round 16 : 3 hdc in 1st hdc ;
*sk 2 hdc, 3 hdc in next hdc* ;
rep from *to* till last hdc.

Round 17 : Decrease row : hdc in 1st hdc ; *sk 2 hdc, hdc in next hdc* ;
rep from *to* till last hdc.

Continue decreasing each round till your beret goes easily over your forehead.  Do remember that you need to decrease a little less than forehead measurement to account for the stretch of your yarn.

When you’ve reached the circumference / size you need for your beret, I suggest you stop increases and make a bit of a brim with just hdc all around – if you think you need that additional brim to fit snugly around head.

Fasten off.  Weave in ends.  Wear your beret and show off your creativity.

Check out the underside – that’s a great pattern too – so yaay! You’ve made a 2-in-1 project.. how cool is that? :)
