STRAWBERRY N CREAM REVERSIBLE LINEN MESSY BUN CAP 2
Last month, I received a really beautiful
surprise bounty of yarn from a friend.
This contained two sets of beautiful multi-coloured yarn from the Indian
ICE Batik range – a yarn I had been eyeing but not yet had a chance to
use. So you can obviously understand my
double excitement on that receipt. The

This is the second messy bun cap that I’m
creating with the second set of variegated yarn, which too cannot work for a
planned pooled pattern – as the variegations are too wide apart.
I am gifting this project to the person who
gifted me the yarn and I do hope she will like it and will enjoy it as much as
I am going to enjoy making it for her.

This is, once again, a superb cap, as its
totally reversible and looks absolutely fantastic. A totally “Must Make” project, and I am so
happy you’re joining me here today to make it with me.
Materials used : Today I’ve used our lovely Indian Vardhaman Millenium and / or Oswal Cashmilon 4-ply yarns with a 4 mm crochet hook
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

Abbreviations used :
lp(s) : Loop(s) sc : Single crochet
dc : Double crochet sp : Space
sl-st : Slip stitch ch : Chain

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
I have used our Indian ICE Batik acrylic for
this project with a 4 mm crochet hook.
I just finished my first Messy Bun hat.. the new
trending article in headwear. I thought
I’d make a second one with the yarn I have in hand, and thought of using the
Linen stitch – and as I was telling my friend this, she pointed me in the
direction of this Free Crochet Pattern, all ready to go – so I’m cheating here
and using this pattern at http://www.acrochetedsimplicity.com/?p=1575 . Here is the lovely inspiration photograph (just in case this was on your "to do" list anyway, you can tick this off right now)
My notes are only for the small changes or
differences that I’ve made in my creation.
I have started with the Foundation Single
Crochet (fsc) rather than a chain, and I found that it was simpler to get to
the back loop this way. As I’m working
on an adult cap, I started with 8 fsc to work on the brim of the messy bun cap.
For the body of the cap, I worked 76 sc, (which
worked for the circumference needed for my hat). I’d suggest is that you work an EVEN NUMBER
of sc for this first round and then carry on with pattern.
Note though that if you are starting with a lesser number of stitches, your end counts will differ from the designer’s patterns. It does not matter as you will still achieve the same end result.
I am saying this
especially for Indians who may not achieve the gauge needed with our
locally available Indian yarns.
The final difference that I made was in working
the linen stitch, I did not join with a slip stitch at the end of a row, but
worked in continuous rounds. I feel that
working this way gives you a totally reversible project, as one is unable to
see the carried over stitch and the first stitch does not show differently
either.
That said, you can work either the way the
designer has intended with the join, or not, and yet again, achieve the same
end result.
