TWO LOVELY BEANIES for A BOY n GIRL
( #Blogaday 26/365 )

Early in the New Year, it seems like I’ve gone on a headwear binge.  I am sure you have seen my earlier blog on pony tail caps titled Sis n me Pony tail caps, followed by the sis n bro caps. Those were for my lovely friend who is off to the US of A and was taking them for her grandchildren.  As I was showing off these creations via Whatsapp, her friend happened to come along and requested a pair for her granddaughter and son too.. so here’s what came out of that message ;).

This blog has two free patterns for another friend’s young grand daughter and grandson.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

1.       SPIRALLY WONDERFUL CAP

girl crochet cap

girl crochet cap

For my first pattern, I have used the brilliant free pattern from Danyel Pink at http://www.danyelpinkdesigns.com/2013/10/crochet-pattern-delaney-hat.html

For a cute little girl, I think this lovely pattern is just the right thing.. cute, spunky, and with the loveliest spirally thingummy’s at the top .. aah, just perfect.

For this pattern, I’ve used a combination of Oswal Cashmilon 4-ply acrylic in white, and Indian ICE Batik 4-ply acrylic yarn in shaded pink with a 4 mm crochet hook.
I worked the body of the hat with the ICE Batik yarn and used the Oswal 4-ply yarn for the cute squirly wirly spirals at the top of the cap.

This is a really cute pattern. It is worked in one continuous row from the forehead to the crown and then up and down the spiral.
The designer started with a chain, but I (as usual) preferred my foundation chain start and started with a foundation half double crochet chain.  As I have said innumerable times, it may be a little difficult to work the foundation chain start, but in the long run, it is so much better to start this way, as both ends of your work have a similar stretch and they match up easier.

Foundation half double crochet (fhdc) : This is an easy way to start a row of hdc without the starting chain row.
Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/SEG2UCRfypA

So at the end of the foundation row, work 15 chain for the spiral and you work 2 or 3 sc in each ch all the way to the end of the foundation chain.  Then as per the design, work a hdc (half double crochet) in back loops only (blo) all the way up and down.
The spirals are worked only at one end, and that end becomes the crown.  So depending on the size you’re making this for, you will get that many spirals and it is an absolute blast.

As before, I worked it using the head size chart (given above) and my project measures about 6.5” from crown to forehead and circumference of about 18”, which is perfect for the child I have made this for.

2.     ZIG-ZAG CAP FOR A LITTLE BOY

This zig-zag beanie is just perfect for the two yarns I’ve chosen for the little boy’s cap.  Blue is his favourite colour and I have one small ball of Vardhaman Baby Soft in blue variegated and one skein of Oswal Cashmilon 4-ply acrylic, which I’ve used with a 4mm crochet hook.

For my second pattern, I have used the brilliant free pattern at

I’ve made this for a 3 yr old child, so as per the chart above, I have worked it to the dimensions given there.
Yes, doesn’t my project look totally different? That’s what happens when you use different yarns – you create something unique and different.
The designer has used classic black and white, and the “V” pattern shows up.
I have used a variegated blue along with a sky blue and my bobble like pattern shows up – and the best part is that both these stitches are what make up this unique project.  Isn’t it just lovely?

My project is just about 6” from forehead to crown ; circumference about 15”, which is just perfect for the toddler I’m making this for.

As you can see though, I’ve added one extra row of zig-zag pattern, and so reduced the sc’s rounds at the end.  I’ve also added one round of reverse single crochet (or crab stitch) to end up my beanie.
